IP Ratings Explained: What IP20, IP44, IP54 and IP65 Mean
Understand dust and water protection before choosing electrical products.

What is an IP rating?#
An IP rating describes the degree of protection provided by an electrical enclosure against access to hazardous parts and the entry of solid objects and water. The classification is defined in IEC 60529.
An IP code normally contains the letters IP followed by two numerals. For example, IP65:
- The first digit describes protection against solid objects and dust.
- The second digit describes protection against water.
The two digits must be read separately. A higher second digit does not automatically tell you anything about dust protection, and a higher first digit does not automatically guarantee water protection.
What the first digit means#

These descriptions are simplified. The exact test conditions, product construction, mounting position and manufacturer instructions remain important.
IP20: basic indoor protection#
IP20 indicates protection against access with a finger and against solid objects above the relevant test size, but it does not declare water protection.
It is commonly associated with dry indoor locations where the product is not exposed to moisture, splashes, dust-heavy conditions or outdoor weather. IP20 should not be treated as suitable for a bathroom splash zone, exposed balcony or outdoor wall simply because the product is installed under a roof.
IP44: protection against splashing water#
IP44 indicates protection against solid objects greater than 1 mm and splashing water from different directions under the standard’s test conditions.
This can be relevant for certain sheltered or damp-area applications, but the rating alone does not decide whether a product is suitable for a particular bathroom, balcony or outdoor location. Distance from water sources, installation zone, cable entry, mounting direction and local requirements still matter.
IP54: dust-protected and splash-resistant#
IP54 combines dust protection at level 5 with protection against splashing water at level 4. It provides stronger protection against dust than IP44, but it is not described as dust-tight.
Products with this rating may be considered for demanding indoor or sheltered applications where dust and occasional splashing are concerns, subject to the manufacturer’s instructions.
IP65: dust-tight and protected against water jets#
IP65 combines dust-tight protection at level 6 with protection against water jets at level 5. It is often used for products intended for more exposed or demanding environments.
However, IP65 does not mean that a product can automatically be submerged, installed in every outdoor location or cleaned with any high-pressure method. Immersion protection is covered by different second-digit classifications and test conditions.

Why an IP rating is not the whole decision#
Before selecting a product, also check:
- The manufacturer’s intended application
- Permitted mounting orientation
- Cable glands, seals and connection method
- Exposure to direct rain, flooding or standing water
- Temperature, sunlight and chemical exposure
- Whether maintenance can damage seals
- Compatibility with the installation zone and local requirements
An enclosure may lose its declared protection if it is drilled incorrectly, mounted in the wrong direction, left partly open or fitted with unsuitable cable entries.

Start by identifying the real exposure. A dry bedroom is different from a bathroom, covered balcony, outdoor gate, warehouse or garden wall. Select a product whose declared application and IP rating match that environment.
