What does the “P” mean on a circuit breaker?#
The letter P means pole. A pole is a switching path inside the device. When a multi-pole breaker operates, its linked poles open together so that the conductors assigned to that device are disconnected at the same time.
Pole count does not tell you the breaker's current rating, trip curve or breaking capacity. Those are separate specifications that must also suit the circuit.

What is a 1P circuit breaker?#
A single-pole (1P) circuit breaker switches and protects one conductor. In many single-phase final circuits, this is the phase conductor.
It is commonly associated with individual lighting, socket or other outgoing circuits when the installation design permits single-pole protection. The neutral is not switched by a standard 1P device.
What is a 2P circuit breaker?#
A double-pole (2P) circuit breaker has two mechanically linked poles. In an appropriate single-phase installation, it can disconnect phase and neutral together.
A 2P device may be used where complete isolation of both current-carrying conductors is required by the system design. It should not be selected simply because two terminals are available; neutral switching rules and device markings must be checked.
A 1P+N device is not necessarily the same as a 2P breaker. In some 1P+N designs, the phase pole provides overcurrent protection while the neutral pole switches without overcurrent protection. Always read the product marking and technical data.
What is a 3P circuit breaker?#
A triple-pole (3P) circuit breaker links three poles for the three phase conductors of a three-phase circuit. If an overload or short circuit causes the device to operate, all linked phase poles open together.
Typical contexts include three-phase motors, pumps, machinery and distribution circuits, subject to the equipment and system design.
What is a 4P circuit breaker?#
A four-pole (4P) circuit breaker switches three phase conductors and the neutral together in a three-phase, four-wire system where neutral disconnection is required.
A 4P device is not automatically necessary in every three-phase installation. Neutral switching can affect safety and system operation, so the earthing arrangement, loads and applicable requirements must be considered by the designer.
