How to Read an LED Light Specification Before Buying

Understand the numbers on an LED product page or package before making a decision.

An LED package can contain many numbers, but they do not all describe the same thing. Wattage tells you how much electrical power the light uses. Lumens describe light output. Kelvin describes the appearance of the light colour. Base type, dimensions and IP rating help determine whether the product fits the intended installation.

Reading these values together helps you avoid a light that is too dim, too harsh, physically incompatible or unsuitable for the environment.

Wattage: power consumption#

Wattage (W) measures electrical power use. It is useful for estimating energy consumption and checking fixture limitations, but it is not a direct measure of brightness. Two LEDs with the same wattage can have different light output because their chips, drivers, optics and thermal design are not equally efficient.

Lumens and efficacy#

Lumens (lm) measure visible light output. When lumen information is available, use it to compare brightness. Lumens per watt (lm/W) describes luminous efficacy: how much visible light a product produces for each watt consumed. High efficacy is useful, but comfort, colour quality, driver stability, heat management and warranty also matter.

Colour temperature#

Colour temperature is expressed in Kelvin (K). Lower values such as 3000K appear warmer; 4000K looks more neutral; 6500K appears cooler or daylight-like. Colour temperature changes the mood and visual character of a space. It does not indicate brightness.

Beam angle and light distribution#

A narrow beam concentrates light over a smaller area. A wide beam spreads light more broadly. A downlight and a bulb can therefore feel different even when their lumen output is similar. Consider fixture spacing, ceiling height and the surface that must be illuminated.

Base, mounting and dimensions#

Check whether a bulb uses B22 or E27, whether a panel is surface-mounted or recessed, and whether a downlight requires a specific cut-out. Compare diameter, height and installation depth before purchase. Never force an incompatible base or fitting.

IP rating and environment#

The IP code describes protection against solid objects and water under defined test conditions. Indoor dry areas and exposed outdoor locations do not require the same enclosure. Match the declared rating and manufacturer instructions to the real environment.

Lifespan, warranty and product quality#

LED life is often described as the period until light output has reduced to a defined level, not simply the moment the product stops working. Check rated lifespan, operating conditions and warranty wording. Heat, voltage conditions and installation can affect real performance.
